A common question we get asked at the yard, where did the name ‘Bogey Knights’ come from?![]()

Some time ago, during the 16-19th century, there was a shortage of sailors in our Navy. The Admiralty set up a division called 'The Press Gang'. The Press Gang would source and pressure people of varying ages, often by force to get them to enlist into the Navy. The nickname of the officer in charge was 'The Bogeyman', as like the bogeyman in traditional children’s tales, most of the taking of men in this manner was at night. As the Navy were so desperate for new recruits, they took to tricking men into enlisting, by dropping a shilling into their tankard. This would equate to a week’s wage at the time. The acceptance of the shilling in the tankard would mean the acceptance of the wage, thus entering the man into service with the Navy. The new recruits would then be rounded up to commence their new working lives on the ships. ![]()
