An Important tool for sailors used for maintaining the sails and rigging aboard ship. A sailor’s fid is a conical, hardwood, carrot shaped, tool of varying length usually between 8 to 19 inches. It is used when working with rope and canvas. A fid’s primary use is for holding pen knots and holes in canvas. It is also used to open and separate the strands of rope when splicing.
